For families facing cancer and other serious illnesses, I offer child and family therapy, support groups for children and free speaking engagements to organizations serving these families. For fourteen years at organizations including American Social Health Association, Northern California Cancer Center and National Cancer Institute, Kaiser Permanente Medical Group I worked in public health education in both reproductive health and oncology prior to becoming a therapist. In 2004, I was certified by the Children's Treehouse Foundation in the CLIMB (Children's Lives Include Moments of Bravery) support group model for children with a parent with cancer. Currently my practice is a marriage of my public health background and my work with children and families.
Why family therapy?
A diagnosis with serious or life-threatening illness is a difficult time for everyone, when good communication is more important than ever. Everyone needs extra support.
Talking with a child about diagnosis and treatment is difficult and brings questions-how much to tell? When to tell? Honesty is key, but that doesn’t mean parents tell their children everything all at once. When information is withheld from children, they may imagine the situation is even worse than the truth, leading to even more difficulties.
Family therapy and parent coaching can guide you in making thoughtful decisions about talking with your children during each phase: diagnosis, treatment and recovery. In therapy, family members can share feelings, facts, and hopes for the future with support and structure. Therapy addresses developmental levels appropriately, to relieve excessive worry and address diagnosis, treatment, living in recovery, and, when necessary, even the sensitive matter of death and dying, to support everyone to cope at this difficult time.
I am available for speaking engagements for organizations serving families with cancer and I offer child & family therapy to support families at this difficult time.
How can children be in a support group? What happens in a support group for kids?
Kids Konnected Children's Support Groups for children combine discussion, art and other enjoyable activities. Together we talk openly about feelings, learn and share together, make journals, decorate worry cups and Coping Cubes, and do other projects at each session. In this open and supportive environment, kids are free to ask questions that may be too hard to ask a parent at this time. To sign up, please call me at Child & Family Counseling Group (408)351-1044.
